Ocean Terminal, Southampton

The Port of Southampton’s new Ocean Terminal was officially opened on 29th May 2009 by the Chief Executive of Carnival UK, David Dingle.  It was built as a means to accommodate the growth in the Port’s Cruise trade, with the number of passengers passing through Southampton expected to reach one million this year.

Following the success of the City Cruise Terminal, Henderson Green were the only member of the team involved with the Feasibility Study to be retained for the Design and Construction phase of the project.

The £19M Ocean Terminal was designed by The Manser Practice to accommodate a single 4,000-Passenger Cruise Ship and is capable of disembarking and embarking 4,000 Passengers over the course of a Cruise day.

The new two-storey 9,000 m2 Terminal took only 6 months from the Design Team being commissioned to hit Site, and one year to Construct.  The Terminal came into operation on 9th May 2009 handling passengers from the Cruise Ship Oceana.

The design presented Henderson Green with significant challenges in order to maintain the minimalist feel of the Departure Lounge; we had to develop a displacement supply terminal that was able to house all the lighting, fire alarm and PA systems in order to keep all services off of the curved ceiling.
