The new 6-storey Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) is set to be the most colourful addition to Southampton’s General Hospital...

Somewhere over the Rainbow

bru1.jpgThe new 6-storey Biomedical Research Unit is set to be the most colourful addition to Southampton’s General Hospital...

The rear corridor is now an explosion of colour with a new Rainbow facade that will vastly change the outlook of the Wards looking onto that aspect of the building.

The colourful decoration will provide a more cheerful and uplifting view from the windows for both Patients and Staff within the Wards.

The front of the Unit is also set to soon receive the Rainbow treatment; so watch this space and we will update you with any progress.

Remembering Michael

michaelgreen.jpgMichael John Green CEng FCIBSE
1938 to 2010
Michael’s passing on 15th June 2010 brings great sadness and loss to Henderson Green.

Michael’s career in Engineering began in 1953 when he joined Adams & Adams, a firm of Heating Engineers in Southampton.  This later led to the formation of a new Consultancy Practice, Adams Green, in 1967 with Gerald Adams.  In 1979, Mike joined forces with Clive Henderson and Henderson Green Jersey began, with Henderson Green Southampton being formed with Rob Pratt and Richard Spinney in 1999.

He was one of the principal players when the old Institution of Heating & Ventilation Engineers (IHVE) was awarded its Royal Charter to become CIBSE some 20 years ago and he was particularly proud of this achievement.

Mike lectured at the Portsmouth School of Architecture on a part-time basis for around 10 years and involved Scientific Staff from Portsmouth to help with ‘environmental’ work leading to a formal Consultancy Practice being set up in the School of Architecture, designing environments for Offices and Factories.  During the late 70s, Mike worked with Dr John Weller, who had researched computer modelling of environmental performance in buildings, and   Dr Tony Youle, a Materials Scientist interested in construction materials.  This led to an interest in Swimming Pools, probably one of the highest energy consuming building types.  Huge energy reductions were achieved over conventional designs and several projects were used as demonstration schemes by the Government.

Mike had a great passion for life, sailing and Engineering and he enriched the lives of all he met.  He was a great inspiration, mentor, friend and colleague and the industry has lost one of its 'True Gentlemen'.

The Red & White Appeal Charity Golf Afternoon

rwagd2.jpgOn 14th May 2010, Henderson Green Southampton and Kier Brazier organised a Charity Golf Afternoon at Bramshaw Golf Club (Hampshire's oldest Golf Club) to raise funds for Southampton General Hospital's The Red & White Appeal.

56 Golfers, from as far afield as Newcastle, Bristol and Essex, teed off on the Club's Manor Course on what turned out to be a bright and warm day; perfect for Golf!

The Winning Team, Brazier Properties, with 90 points, are shown below right with their prizes being presented by John Jacobs (third from left) and organisers Shane Mason of Kier (left) and Robert Pratt of Henderson Green (right).  Coming a close second on 89 points was Allaway Acoustics and Nigel Powell took the Individual first prize with a score of 41 points.

The 'longest drive' was won by Mark Patience and Richard Hewitt took the 'nearest the pin' prize.  The Putting Competition was won by Tim Thomas, who kindly donated his prize of a bottle of Champagne for the Raffle.

rwagd1.jpgAfter dinner entertainment was provided by local Golfing legend and Club Member, John Jacobs, who recounted some of his most memorable experiences as well as inviting questions from the audience.  Robbie Sampson, a young man who benefitted from the excellent work being done at Southampton General Hospital, told his personal story behind his recovery following a bone marrow transplant.

A Raffle and Auction also took place after dinner (with prizes donated from the Charity, the Organisers and Teams) and a total of over £3,500.00 was raised for The Red & White Appeal; a magnificent effort by all involved and we really appreciate the support from everyone for this worthwhile Appeal.

Ten Year Anniversary Celebrations go with a Hissssssssssssss!

We at Henderson Green Southampton celebrated our tenth year in business with an event in October that sent shivers down everyone’s spine!  Our spooky Halloween Party took place on Thursday, 29th October in our plush new offices in Carlton Crescent.

Not quite as plush that night though as the rooms were decorated with chains, cobwebs, spiders and even severed heads!  Flickering pumpkins led the way up the front steps to our door for our guests, who were then greeted by our 'Trick or Treaters' and 'Henderson' our zombie Butler!

We couldn’t have wished for a better turnout as we entertained almost one hundred of our close Friends, Clients and professional Colleagues with games, competitions, lots of delicious food and plenty to drink for all.  The star performer of the night, however, was a 15ft Yellow Burmese Python, looked after by his owner 'Snaky Sue'.  'Ra', the Python, was more than happy to be handled by our guests and obviously wasn’t camera shy as he slithered his way around necks and shoulders for many photographs.

Our Halloween Raffle and 'Guess the Name of the Butler' and Putting Competitions also managed to raise £526.00 for 'The Red & White Appeal'; our chosen charity for the next three years.

It was a pleasure to spend such an enjoyable evening with the people that have supported us right from the beginning plus those we have met along the way and hopefully will be part of our successes in the future too.  If the next ten years promise to be as rewarding as the last ten, then we are all looking forward to being a part of the next phase of Henderson Green.

labc-national-commended-award.jpgHenderson Green Southampton are delighted to announce that the Paediatric Theatres Project at Southampton General Hospital, which recently won the LABC South East Region 'Building Excellence' Award for the 'Best Healthcare Building', was also awarded a 'Commended' in the category of 'Best Healthcare Building' at the LABC National Awards on Tuesday, 20th October 2009.

We were part of the team with BAM Construction, which also included Studio Four Architects, Allen Holmes and Capita Bobrowski.

The sustainable scheme also featured as one of the BREEAM Healthcare Pilot schemes, with HG Southampton working closely with the BRE and Gary Spring of Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust in early 2008.

Rob Britten, Project Manager for BAM Construction, said "This is an excellent achievement and our thanks go to all the Team members for their part in this challenging project.".

A Good Employer Again!

Building Magazine announced its’ ‘Top 50’ Good Employers within the Construction Industry on 15th October within its' Good Employer Guide and Henderson Green have been listed for a second year running!

This great achievement comes at a time when our Competitors are having to make tough financial and resource decisions and because of this our inclusion this year is something we are extra proud of.

The process began last year when Rob Pratt, one of the Directors at HG Southampton, filled in the Pre-Qualifying Questionnaire and compiled the Staffing List for our Organisation. Online Surveys were issued to a selection of technical and professional staff and, using a simple weighting system to rank the confidential responses, a score was produced for each individual and then for our Company as a whole.

Companies scoring above the ‘pass rate’ were then asked to supply details of any benefits provided over and above salaries and bonus’, information about the sectors in which they worked and their projects within these sectors.

The Top 50 Companies were listed alphabetically within the publication and were also ranked in Top 5’s for various categories. We were also excited to be included in the Top 5 for the following categories: geg09-link.jpg

• Engineers
• Small Business
• Ability to Contribute
• Smarter Working
• Feel Good Factor

This endorsement really is testament to the people we have within our organisation, their loyalty and commitment and it makes us very happy to be able to cultivate and nurture a workplace that is so enjoyable to be part of.
